Rijksmuseum

The Dutch Golden Age under one roof, from Rembrandt's Night Watch to doll's houses that cost more than real ones.

The national museum of the Netherlands tells eight centuries of Dutch art and history in a building that is a work of art in itself. Beyond the famous paintings you will find Delftware, ship models, silver and an Asian pavilion that most visitors walk straight past — which is exactly why it is worth finding.

The Van Eeghen Drawing Book
19.8.2026

A display around an extremely rare early 17th-century drawing book, donated by the Van Eeghen family after more than three centuries in their possession. Its roughly 30 drawings — full-page biblical scenes, some on blue paper and barely exposed to light — are attributed to Rombout Uylenburgh (1580/85-1627/28) and his workshop. Uylenburgh was a court painter in Krakow and Danzig, and a relative of Saskia van Uylenburgh, Rembrandt's wife. A loan from the Rembrandt House Museum brings much of his small surviving oeuvre together for the first time.

Willem de Kooning at work
9.10.2026 — 17.1.2027

One hundred years after De Kooning left Rotterdam for New York, the Rijksmuseum brings together more than 120 works in the first exhibition to place his drawings at the centre, complemented by celebrated paintings and sculptures. Highlights include Excavation (1950, Art Institute of Chicago), Pink Angels (c. 1945) and Clam Diggers (1963). Woman I and Woman and Bicycle hang concurrently in the Gallery of Honour. Developed with the Art Institute of Chicago and The Willem de Kooning Foundation.
