Rust and Ash

In this painting, I wanted to experiment with a style that feels a bit like impressionism, but with a digital twist almost as if I were mimicking impasto techniques. I used thick, textured brushstrokes to give it a lot of depth and movement. The color palette is mostly deep reds, browns, and maroons very dark at the bottom, almost black, and gradually lightening up into these pinkish-reds in the upper right corner. That contrast gives the piece this kind of fiery, almost hellish glow. The main subject is this massive, rocky or mountainous formation of collapsed towers that dominates the entire canvas. But instead of sharp, distinct rocks, I let the shapes swirl and blur together, creating a sort of smoky, cloudy atmosphere. Hidden within all of that are these ghostly faces not clearly defined, more like impressions of faces as if they're part of the rock itself. They look worn, aged, maybe even tormented. Their expressions are hard to read, but there's definitely a feeling of suffering. On the formation, I painted these tall, dark figures they’re barely humanoid, almost skeletal. They’re shadowy and blend into the environment, like they're emerging from or dissolving back into the mountain. They add to the eerie, otherworldly atmosphere I was aiming for. There’s a small hint of light in the upper right just enough to suggest a break in the darkness, maybe a touch of hope or escape but it’s really subtle. The whole mood of the piece is dark, mysterious, a bit unsettling. I wanted it to feel like a nightmare landscape, somewhere between reality and a kind of emotional, psychological space filled with isolation, despair, and a strange, haunting stillness.
