Shadows and Hues

This painting centers on a solitary figure, shown from behind. I gave her dark, blurred hair and wrapped her in a flowing, shadowy robe, the idea was to make her feels anonymous, almost universal. You can’t see the face, and that was intentional. I wanted the viewer to step into that figure’s place, to feel what she is feeling. The background was really important to me in setting the mood. It’s made up of soft, swirling tones, orange-reds, rose hues, and these muted violet-blues, all blended with a rough, expressive brushstroke style. Nothing’s sharply defined. I wanted it to feel like the air is thick with atmosphere, like it could be either dawn or dusk. That in-between time where everything feels still but alive. Near the top, there’s a lighter area — almost white — kind of glowing faintly at the center. It’s not a sun or a moon, really, just a suggestion of light. Maybe it’s hope, maybe clarity, or maybe just an opening in the clouds. I like leaving that part open to interpretation. The piece walks a line between abstraction and representation. There are recognizable elements — the figure, the robe — but they’re all blurred and symbolic. What I was really trying to capture was a moment of inwardness, of quiet movement within stillness. That emotional space between presence and absence.
