Hempens, Netherlands
Ernesto Lemke lives and works in Hempens, near Leeuwarden in the Netherlands. He studied at the Minerva Academy of Art in Groningen, where his initial interest in comic book illustration shifted toward drawing and painting. He exhibited his work starting in 1997 after being scouted during his graduation exhibition. In 2005, he turned his focus to educational work.
In 2020, Lemke participated as a candidate in LEGOMasters 2021, the Dutch-Belgian television production. During an episode centered on art, he created two works that led to significant appreciation and marked the beginning of his exploration of Lego as an artistic medium, which he describes as "painting with bricks" or Brickpainting. He subsequently won in the art program Stars on Canvas with a Brickpainting portrait of Arjen Lubach. His work has been featured on the social media channels of the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum, the Fries Museum, and the Accademia Carrara.
In December 2021, Lemke collaborated with the Fries Museum to create a live Brickpainting based on a work from the National Portrait Gallery's collection. His work continues to expand across private commissions, television projects, and exhibitions as he explores the possibilities of Lego portraiture.
