Brigitte Wawoe

Brigitte Wawoe was born in Heidelberg, Germany in 1939. Her interest in art began in childhood, influenced by her father who was an artist and architect. She studied art and philosophy at Heidelberg University, then taught art, German and philosophy in Caracas, Venezuela for three years.

She lived in Curaçao from 1967 to 1978, where she developed a close relationship with the island and the Table Mountain. She worked in the quarry of the Table Mountain Mining Company, creating marble and calcite crystal sculptures. After two years in London attending post-graduate courses at Moreley College, she moved to the Netherlands, where she continues to live and work. She returns regularly to Curaçao to continue her work at the quarry.

Over her career, Wawoe has worked across multiple techniques and materials including marble, dolomite, serpentine, travertine, bronze, painting and glass art. She works intuitively, prioritizing form in both her paintings and sculptures. In her stone work, she allows the material to reveal its hidden form, sometimes leaving surfaces in their natural state or incorporating iron elements. Her style is mostly abstract, hinting at forms without fully rendering them, inviting viewers to engage closely with each piece.

Wawoe has exhibited regularly throughout the Netherlands and internationally, including in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Curaçao.
