About the work

A man clings to a large ball of soil somewhere out in the countryside. He appears to be hugging the soil as if it is a long-lost friend, or as if his life depends upon it! The image came to me as one depicting some great loss - a loss so big that even a large ball of earth cannot convey its magnitude. I collected the red soil locally, from a place where I walk my dogs - on the edge of the city, and full of wildlife. It could be that the man in this piece is embracing Nature as a way of dealing with his great loss. It is a recognition of the solace human beings can gain from contact with the natural world.
