  • About the artist

This page is dedicated to the South-African artist, Idalet Emmerentia Haasbroek Pauw, who created magnificently large canvasses and painted it with vibrant colours and beautifully flowing compositions. Idalet painted directly onto large blank canvasses, without any preparatory drawings. She combined the spiritual and fantasy worlds with medieval shapes and symbols. Since representing South Africa in Cologne and living in Germany for a few months at a time, her fine art started drawing more inspiration from Africa. Due to aching hands, she stopped creating fine art paintings and moved towards abstract art where she would tilt the canvas so that the paint could roll over the surface.

Idalet had exhibitions in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Köln, Frankfurt, Berlin, München, Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Paris. Large decorating companies and hotels invited her for solo exhibitions in Jordan, Bremen, Ibiza, Luxembourg, Köln and Cairo; and Rosenthal AG requested her designs for reproduction on their porcelain. Her work was purchased by hotel groups, large decorating firms and private collectors all over the world from countries which include Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, Russia, USA, and the UK; and South-Africa, Botswana, Angola, Nigeria and Egypt. She was also interviewed for TV programmes in South Africa and Germany.

A few comments from Idalet's Visitor's Book is listed below: “'Idalet, many people paint, but a true artist is rare to find. You are an artist, a work of art, a delight'. 'Every brushstroke is a masterpiece!!' 'Exceptional!!!' 'Soul Inspiring.' 'Passionate use of colour.' 'Bold artwork with a beautiful combination of mythology, religion and ethnicity.' 'A lot of artistic genius!' 'The paintings are exceptionally impressive and excellent!' 'Absolutely brilliant!!!' 'Breathtaking!!' 'At Last! This is Life! A fantastic journey through wonderful worlds.' 'What a discovery.' 'Your style is very impressive - it touches everything. Everything radiates warmth and peacefulness and this feeling would still affect me for a long while. Thank you for a wonderful experience.' 'Beautiful work from a beautiful soul.' 'Flamboyant, magnificent use of colour – great art.' 'I love the vibrancy of the work.'"

Tragically Idalet died due to a pulmonary embolism, only 45 years old (1962 - 2008).
